The Cmrl team is investigating route possibilities | Madurai News


Madurai: A team from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) visited Madurai and inspected various locations in the city on Friday as part of Madurai Metro Rail’s preliminary studies. A feasibility study for Madurai Metro is already underway.
The CMRL team started its journey from the place assigned to AIIMS, Madurai. Of AIIMS in Thoppur, CMRL team traveled to Periyar Bus Station, Vaigai River, Matuthavani road and studied various infrastructure works in progress in the city.
CMRL Managing Director MA Siddique, who led the team, said the feasibility study is being done by a private agency but they wanted to corroborate on their own.
“We traveled from AIIMS and visited various places in the city. We wanted to see the structures as well as the major infrastructure works that are going on in the city. This will be helpful in case we undertake a metro project for Madurai in the future,” he said.
The official said it was preliminary to conclude anything on Madurai Metro and they would wait for the feasibility study report.
In a letter to Madurai MP Su Venkatesan, CMRL said that the government of Tamil Nadu has given its approval to carry out feasibility studies for the implementation of an adapted rapid transit system for tier two cities like Madurai, Tirunelveli, Salem and Trichy. The tender for the feasibility study has been issued to Balaji Rail Roads Systems Private Limited.
